Does anyone have any advice on how to tell if I’m having an outbreak if I’m on suppression therapy ? I feel like because I am on meds and taking lysine that I might be having a mild outbreak and not know it ? I’m also scared to get off my suppression therapy because I’m worried it will happen all the time.

I am 19 years old and was diagnosed with Genital Herpes yesterday (December 30th). I am so confused and keep wondering how and why this is happening to me. I have been with my boyfriend for a year now and the first thoughts were did one of us cheat? We were both very confused. I stumbled upon this as I was trying to gain knowledge on how to be safe and prevent outbreaks. I found that this can lay dormant for years which made my boyfriend and I feel a little bit better. I live with the constant fear of him leaving due to this, even though he says otherwise and is an amazing and supportive man. I just don’t know where to go from here and cry constantly. I’m hoping this place will help, because I have fallen into a deep depression.

Hi Morgan! When was he blood tested? Why was he blood tested? It’s not a routine STD test, so I kind of doubt he has been tested unless he has specifically asked for it. He might’ve asked for an STD test and thought it was included but it wasn’t.

That said, I believe the average time it takes for an initial outbreak to appear is something like 2-12 days from exposure. Have you been with anyone else since then? If not, maybe it’s from a while ago but has just decided to surface. I’ve read about married couples that find out years into their marriage and their spouse is clean.

But try not to worry too much about where it came from. Worry about how you’re feeling. I cried for two weeks after my diagnosis (on Nov 13th). If you can, try not to google too much about herpes. Avoid reading the negative stories out there. Instead, get your information from forums like these. Dr. Kelly’s book helped me a lot. People with herpes still find love and happiness. (People without herpes sometimes still don’t.) There’s no reason you can’t have those things. I’ve disclosed to one person, and he didn’t care at all. You might have to be a little more selective about who you date, but it might help you avoid a lot of jerks. Don’t worry too much right now though about telling some imaginary guy you haven’t met yet. Deal with it when it comes along. Hope this helps a little.

Best of luck & lots of love.

I am newly diagnosed and eat nuts daily. Should I totally cut them out of my diet forever? I think I had an outbreak with my ex-husband 8 years ago.

    Hi Marissa,

I’m not Dr. Kelly but I have the same thing as you (gHSV1) so I’ve read up quite a bit.

You will only have outbreaks genitally, assuming you don’t also have oHSV1. (It’s extremely rare to get the same type in both places though. I read that this only happens if you contract it at the same time, but I don’t know that for sure.) Because you have gHSV1 and not oHSV1, you can’t pass it on by kissing or by you giving oral sex.

However, it is possible for a partner to contract it orally from you through them giving you unprotected oral sex, even without a sore due to shedding. But gHSV1 sheds very infrequently (after the first 6-12 months)–only 3-5% of the time. I found this handout very helpful, though I wish it gave its sources: http://herpesopportunity.com/downloads/herpes-opportunity-disclosure-handout.pdf

    Hope this helps!

The burning and redness/inflamed-ness sounds like it to me, but I’m no expert. I’ve only had one outbreak. I had 2-3 bumps on the outside but more on the inside. Inside the sores kinda looked like tiny little cuts. I honestly wouldn’t have noticed them if my doctor hadn’t said they were there.

If it’s not herpes, then maybe you’re allergic to your soap or laundry detergent/softener. I get a rash from fabric softener… Best of luck!

I am slightly itchy down there from time to time. I think this happened before I had my first (and only) outbreak. I’m not sure if this is a symptom or if it’s normal. Maybe it’s my soap. I use Dove. I don’t see any outbreaks. Not sure if I am being paranoid.

I am so glad to hear that the book is helping you to feel more empowered. One of my first go to supplements specific to herpes is using either an immune builder made of mushrooms or to use the product Hygeia. Topically, I like to use colloidal silver or coconut oil infused with Melissa oil or lavender.

I would talk to your doctor in terms of the use of acyclovir. If you have had an outbreak for 3 months, then my guess is that it is not working. There are other prescriptions out on the market that you might respond better to or you could go all natural. It’s really up to you.

Hi Dr. Kelly! Thanks for the answer. Im taking aciclovir but im getting better since i started to read your book. For the first time in this three months im feeling in control. Im in a forgiving process. My first outbreak was so “easy” that i never take herpes seriously. Now im so upset, but im working on it. Do you recommend to leave the aciclovir and start a natural remedy? What remedy do you recommend first?

I am so sorry to hear about how much pain you are in and in most cases, the first outbreak is the worst. It can take some time for your body to build up antibodies, but once it does, future outbreaks are usually less severe.

If it hurts to urinate, you can do so in the bath tub in a small amount of cold water. I know that might sound gross, but believe me, it really helps. You can also use ice on the area to decrease the pain and increase the healing rate. Be sure to pat the area dry when you are done with the ice and do not wear thongs during your outbreak as they can be irritating.

Once the area is dry, you can use baking soda on external open sores. This can help with some of the pain and itching.

And finally, some ibuprofen to help with the inflammation and pain can be helpful.

There are several other recommendations to help with the pain and to increase your healing rate that can be found in my online course. You can check out the Foundation Course at https://pinktent.com/funnel/foundations-book.php This course contains everything you would ever need to know from managing your symptoms to overcoming the emotional pain and devastation to learning how to live and love again.

Wishing you the very best this holiday season. I know it is a challenging time, but we women here at Pink Tent are here for you. Your secrets are safe with us.

Thank you for sharing. I know how upsetting an outbreak can be and three months is a long time to be suffering from an outbreak. I would focus on decreasing your stress levels and improving your immune system. Have you tried any supplements or remedies? If so, what have you tried? I would definitely include at least one antiviral remedy that is specific to herpes in addition to making sure you have a well balanced diet.

I’m having my first outbreak and I’m in excruciating pain. Does anyone know what relieves this? It hurts so bad to do anything at all and with tomorrow being Christmas Eve I have to spend time with my family and pretend like everything is okay. They can never know. I’m so scared and so ashamed and I have no idea how to make this better. If anyone has advice I would really appreciate it. I’m so scared 🙁

    Dr Kelly,

I have recently been diagnosed with HSV 1, which I have experienced my initial outbreak genitally. My doctor has told me I have contracted herpes by receiving oral sex from a partner with a cold sore. I have so many questions. Can or will I have outbreaks orally or just genitally? If a partner performs oral sex during a period where I am not having any outbreak will I cause them to have oral lesions? Although I have no oral lesions can I pass this on by kissing or performing oral sex? I’m sorry for all my questions, I just feel overwhelmed with what if questions. Thank you for your time, Dr. Kelly really and truly.

    Dear Dr. Kelly,

In my attempts to better understand and aide in healing my recent (and first ever) outbreak of shingles, I came across your book and website. I fully respect the Pink Tent and want to make sure that I may participate here even though I do not currently show signs of HSV.

I’d also like to know if your book would be beneficial to me – I’m hoping to radically adjust my over-stressed lifestyle and diet to avoid this painful and debilitating viral outbreak, and I’ve learned that the HSV and HZV are related. I’d also like to treat myself naturally rather than face taking the anti-viral medication I just took at a future outbreak – there has to be a better way; would your book help with that?

In any case, I love the beauty of this discussion forum and the wonderful work you’ve done. Just reviewing your videos, I can see that this virus is seriously misunderstood. Thank you for doing this wonderful work, and for addressing my questions.

    Lisa
