Dr. Kelly and Jenelle Pierce Talk Stigmas

Dr. Kelly is part of the Steering Committee for Janelle’s new project, Herpes Activists Networking to Dismantle Stigma (HANDS), which is comprised of more than 12 publicly “out” herpes activists along with a growing list of member organizations. This is the first time herpes advocates have come together to form a cohesive group geared toward promoting awareness and reducing herpes stigma.

HANDS advocates represent a diverse group of individuals – folks across the lifespan, people of color, the Hispanic community, and varying orientations and gender identities – all coming together for a shared interest: to amplify the voices of those who are stigmatized, ridiculed, and shamed. Our members include authors, doctors, YouTube content creators, artists, podcasters, athletes, bloggers, and sexual health educators, all with one thing in common: we have herpes.

About Jenelle:

Jenelle Marie Pierce (fka Davis) is the Founder & Executive Director of The STD Project, the STD Expert for Answers.com, a Hepatitis Expert for HepatitisC.net, a Spokesperson for PositiveSingles.com, an adjunct professor, an eater of jello, and a lover of snow. She was diagnosed with genital herpes at the age of 16, and is also proof an STI is not a deal-breaker or the end of your world; rather, it is merely an unexpected curve-ball in this interesting game we call life.

How Facebook is Ruining Self-Confidence- Audio

Why is it that so many women give their power and self-confidence away to Facebook? What used to be a fun place to connect and share, has now become a place that leaves so many women feeling depressed, isolated, exhausted, jealous, ugly, anxious and powerless.

Who is this conversation for? single women, moms, working women, girls, successful women, CEO’s…you name it…any woman who is feeling like Facebook might be damaging their self-esteem and self-worth.

Embracing Vulnerability & Living An Authentic Life

Dr. Kelly Interviews Maryalicia Verdecchia – Pink Tent

As Brene Brown teaches, vulnerability is our greatest asset. Ever since I heard her share this poignant message to the world in her Ted Talk that went viral, I have explored it, embraced it and shared it. While these waters of vulnerability place us in a state of great uncertainty, there is hope, light and connection found in the depths of this truth.

When I met Maryalicia just a few weeks ago, I witnessed a woman who embodies this vulnerability. I met her at a social media event in Denver and I was immediately struck by her candidness and outgoing personality. We had an instant connection.

Now that I look back, I realize why. She was totally open and vulnerable with me when I shared with her what I was doing with Pink Tent™ to give women with herpes hope, happiness and healing. With her training as a CNA, she was well versed on the subject. In short order, we were talking about how isolating and shame ridden other medical conditions can be too. From this shame, she told me about how a mental health campaign called “A Day Without Shame” was born.

In this interview, Maryalicia shares all from her diagnosis of bipolar to the tragedies she has endured in life.

We are not alone in this shame ridden culture and Maryalicia teaches us how to overcome our fears of being judged and open up to living an authentic life where we can learn how to truly love ourselves.

About Maryalicia

Maryalicia is a Strategic Talent Acquisitions Leader, Savvy Social Media Advocate, Branding, Onboarding & Employment Engagement Specialist, who also has her CNA w/QMAP. People describe her as professional, positive, influential, social, energetic, authentic, compassionate, inspiring, loyal, reliable and talkative. Over the years, Maryalicia has constantly sought to improve herself (while remaining true to herself) in order to be successful in work and personal life.

You would not know it meeting her that she has been diagnosed during with ADHD, Major Depression, and Bi-Polar 2, and fought slut-shaming. Although she bowed to the stigma of the labels at first,  she now realizes that these ‘label’s help define who she is, and help her to understand herself better, AND DO NOT define her.

Due to the shaming of her confidence, personality, and high sex drive, Maryalicia became fascinated by deviancy, and how societies defined this term, especially when it created social stigmas. She graduated with a BA in Sociology, and has continued to keep up on the latest information on social stigmas and how they affect our lives. She is here today to talk about some of her experiences, ways to combat stigma, and let you know about National Day without Stigma on October 9th, 2017.

Jenelle Marie Shares On Embracing Life After STD Diagnosis

Jenelle Marie, Founder of the STD Project, Shares On Herpes Diagnosis and Learning To Embrace Life To The Fullest

Interview By Dr. Kelly- Pink Tent™

This month I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing Jenelle Marie Pierce (fka Davis), the founder of the STD Project, and a huge voice within the STD community. Having been diagnosed with genital herpes at the age of 16, Jenelle had to learn how to navigate through feelings of shame, social stigmas, and painful outbreaks at a young age.

There are many people who feel that a herpes diagnosis is a “death sentence” to their love life. It can bring with it shame, pain, and guilt that we live with for years, believing we no longer deserve to be loved. I hope you listen to Jenelle’s story and find hope in the fact that living a life full of love and happiness is possible! There are more and more women like Jenelle that are opening up and sharing their stories, hoping to be a catalyst in changing the way herpes is viewed in our current society.

I am so excited to share this interview with our Pink Tent™ community! Watch the video here:
