Dr. Kelly and Jenelle Pierce Talk Stigmas

Dr. Kelly is part of the Steering Committee for Janelle’s new project, Herpes Activists Networking to Dismantle Stigma (HANDS), which is comprised of more than 12 publicly “out” herpes activists along with a growing list of member organizations. This is the first time herpes advocates have come together to form a cohesive group geared toward promoting awareness and reducing herpes stigma.

HANDS advocates represent a diverse group of individuals – folks across the lifespan, people of color, the Hispanic community, and varying orientations and gender identities – all coming together for a shared interest: to amplify the voices of those who are stigmatized, ridiculed, and shamed. Our members include authors, doctors, YouTube content creators, artists, podcasters, athletes, bloggers, and sexual health educators, all with one thing in common: we have herpes.

About Jenelle:

Jenelle Marie Pierce (fka Davis) is the Founder & Executive Director of The STD Project, the STD Expert for Answers.com, a Hepatitis Expert for HepatitisC.net, a Spokesperson for PositiveSingles.com, an adjunct professor, an eater of jello, and a lover of snow. She was diagnosed with genital herpes at the age of 16, and is also proof an STI is not a deal-breaker or the end of your world; rather, it is merely an unexpected curve-ball in this interesting game we call life.

Full Moon Forgiveness Ceremony: Burning Woman

It’s time to #forgiveandlive

Who do you need to forgive? Write a letter to that person or to yourself describing in detail what you are ready to let go of.

In this video, I burned a victims notification of a pardon for the man who sexually abused me years ago. I am finally “burning” the past, and you can too. You can choose peace and not let your past define you. Stand up for all women!

This video WILL transform you! While you watch this video, write down who you can forgive and join me in this cleansing ritual!

We are meant to heal in community and I can’t think of a better way than to stand, locking hands and hearts and releasing that which no longer serves us. Forgiveness is truly a gift of the Spirit!

How Facebook Is Ruining Your Self-Confidence

Why do so many women give their power and self-confidence away to Facebook?

What used to be a fun place to connect and share, has now become a place that leaves so many women feeling depressed, isolated, exhausted, jealous, ugly, anxious and powerless.

Single Women, Moms, Female Doctors, Teenage Girls, Successful women, Millionaires, Teachers, Fitness Instructors …you name it…women of all sorts of backgrounds are ruining their self esteem and self worth through Facebook.

Unfortunately, the same platform that can leave women jumping for joy and inspired to live a great life, so often it does just the opposite. They walk away from our computers feeling like CRAP!

So…why are some women’s feelings of self-worth and self-esteem so dependent on the likes and shares they receive?

Research has shown that…

People who are more goal oriented and feel a sense of purpose in life are less sensitive to their Facebook or social media’s responses.

Why? Because people who are more goal oriented are more likely to think of their empowering future and what lies ahead. They don’t need the quick fix of a like to prove that they are progressing towards their dreams. If you have a dream and a plan and you are taking action towards that plan…you are able to see into your future.

People who lack goals often suffer from the need to get their emotional needs met in the short term vs long term. They want success now and they are unwilling to pay their dues for love, health, money, a dream home, dream career etc. So, when they see someone else on Facebook that has what they want… they become jealous, sad, and self-sabotaging.

When we have a sense of purpose, our life has meaning. We feel a deeper connection with people and the outside world. We know that we have something to contribute. So, if you know you have a purpose, you aren’t so bummed out when your Facebook posse doesn’t “like” your posts.

How to turn your Goddess Confidence ON
-Do a Facebook Detox for 30 days or more and see if your self-confidence increases
Set some GOALS– short term and long term and start taking baby steps to achieve them
-Estimate how much time you spend on Facebook and redirect your focus and time to Self Love activities
-Turn Facebook Jealousy into a game plan to go out and get what you want!
-Challenge yourself: Come up with a list of 100 things you LOVE about yourself

Herpes Diet: Managing Herpes Symptoms With Fall Veggies

Herpes SymptomsHerpes Diet: Managing Herpes Symptoms With Fall Veggies
By Contributing Author Stephanie

As those of us who have read Dr. Kelly’s Book Live, Love & Thrive with Herpes know, diet can have a huge affect on how our bodies experience the herpes virus.  Whether it’s the balance between lysine and arginine in our bodies, or simply eating well to support our immunity, it is important to actively support our bodies through our diet. This is a key to managing our herpes symptoms.  In this blog, I will go over some of the fall vegetables you can eat to support your body in suppressing future herpes outbreaks.  I strongly suggest referring back to Dr. Kelly’s previous blog on lysine and arginine for reference, as it explains how and why lysine is helpful in preventing outbreaks and arginine can be a trigger for outbreaks.

Root vegetables and squash are common fall vegetables that are delicious and nutritious for our bodies! Most vegetables have fairly high amounts of lysine.  Did you know that wheat and other grains contain high levels of arginine? This is why it is not uncommon for people diagnosed with herpes to go gluten free. If we can replace our grains  (which contain high levels of arginine) with vegetables high in complex carbs, our bodies will likely thank us. Of course this is a personal choice, but if you suffer from constant outbreaks, you can always test out this method to see if it helps you!

Some fall vegetables I love that are either higher in lysine than arginine or about equal in amounts of the two according to the sources I have researched are: beets, turnips, select squashes, and potatoes (white and sweet).

A great way to get the most out of these delicious fall foods is to pair them with foods we know are very high in lysine. One amazing recipe that comes to mind is roasted beets with goat cheese.  If you have never tried roasted red beets with goat cheese, I suggest you do so soon. If your recipe calls for nuts, you should omit them, since nuts are another known herpes trigger.

Another great and super easy recipe is roasted acorn squash filled with yogurt. Yogurts containing probiotics in the form of live cultures can also help boost our immunity to better manage herpes symptoms (assuming you are not dairy free).  If this is the case, there are dairy free yogurts made with coconut milk. High levels of probiotics and lysine in this meal, or dessert, make it an excellent and healthy choice for the season.  Since sugar affects the body in a way that prevents us from fighting off viruses, it is important to minimize our intake of sugar to prevent future outbreaks.  This is one of many delicious squash recipes that can easily double as a sweet dessert.

One last recipe that incorporates fall veggies with other foods containing high amounts of lysine is this Italian fagioli soup recipe.  This recipe is great for those cold and busy months and is packed with root veggies and squash.  The ground turkey is a great addition, as turkey is one meat in particular that is very high amounts in lysine.  You will even get some lysine from the parmesan cheese on top! I urge you all to take a look at some of the different recipes you can try to incorporate some of the seasonal vegetables into your diet throughout these colder months.

Keeping veggies in our diet consistently is so important for our health, regardless of living with herpes or not; but of course if we can decrease our herpes symptoms at the same time, why wouldn’t we do it?

Living A Normal Life With Herpes – PopSugar Featuring Dr. Kelly

It’s so exciting when I find new articles about herpes popping up all over the internet, especially when they are found in popular sources such as Glamour, Women’s Health and the Huffington Post.

It indicates that people are finally talking about herpes and opening up a dialogue. This dirty little secret that no one wanted to talk about years ago is now being brought out of the shadows and into the light.

My years of work within the herpes community has been focused on having women share their story as the first step towards breaking free from the internal shame and pain a diagnosis can cause. Now women all over the world are not only sharing their stories online, they are actively joining in on an even bigger conversation about what it means to have the virus.

I was recently featured in Pop Sugar Fitness’ article, Worried You Can’t Live a Normal Life With Herpes? This Doctor Has Good News In it I shared some facts and dispelled some common myths about the virus. This is just one of the many articles coming out that are slowly chipping away at the social stigma surrounding herpes.

Even though women with herpes can’t be contestants on The Bachelor, it is my vision that this movement of de-stigmatizing herpes will help women break free of the shame and reclaim their health and happiness.
